Founded by Claus-Johannes Voss, Alfred Nehemias, and August Eberstein in 1906, Simplo Filler Pen Company emerged by producing up-scale pens in the Schanzen district of Hamburg, Germany. The group’s primary model was the Rouge et Noir in 1909. In 1910 the pen was created that later gave the company its name, Montblanc. The Meisterstück name was used for the first time in 1924, meaning “masterpiece” in English. In 1909 one of the three partners, August Eberstien, stole funds from the Montblanc company and fled to the United States. Despite this controversy the company has still remained successful.
A trademark identified with Montblanc is the white stylized six-pointed star with rounded soft edges. This image is representative of an aerial view of the Montblanc snowcapped mountains. The symbol was adopted in 1913. The number 4810 is also a reoccurring theme on the watches but is commonly associated with the symbol you will find on the Montblanc pens.
The company was acquired by Dunhill in 1977. Then the brand began producing luxury goods, such as watches, jewelry, fragrances, leather good, and eyewear. After World War II Montblanc assisted with the war effort, producing measurements for the army. In 1988 Montblanc integrated with the Richemont Group. Then, in 1997 Montblanc garnered great attention and became very famous when it was present at the SIHH watch fair in Geneva for the first time in the company’s history.
In 2003 Montblanc launched the TimeWalker watch collection, which was very popular. Time Walker symbolizes people who are dynamic and have a love for pure, simple, and luxurious design in a watch. In 2006 the Montblanc Company celebrated its 100th birthday and for this rare occasion, designed a beautifully crafted diamond with 43 facets, which was cut to the form of the Montblanc signet. For this glorious 100th anniversary, Montblanc released the remarkable Star Chrono GMT Perpetual Calendar watch, which is touched with the real Montblanc Diamond in the crown.
Recently, Montblanc turned its attention to the watchmaking industry. In 2007, Montblanc and the Swiss watch brand, Minerva, joined forces to create the “Institut Minerva de Recherche en Haute Horlogerie”. The two created a laboratory that works with new solutions and groundbreaking watchmaking technology. In April 2008 Montblanc introduced the calibers MB R100 and MB R200 in Star Nicolas Rieussec chronograph, which was a great success. In the United States Montblanc watches can only be found in major cities, such as Boston, Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Costa Mesa, San Jose, San Diego, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Washington DC, Baltimore, Atlanta, and San Antonio. Montblanc watches have also been worn by actor Will Smith in multi-million dollar films that were viewed world-wide. Montblanc continues to expand throughout the globe, creating only the finest and most exquisite watches.
