In 2012, Tudor completely revamped their line of dive watches. With that came the introduction of the first Pelagos model. The Pelagos is an ultra-modern dive watch, both in its functionality and its design. Since its inception, the Pelagos has been released in a number of new variations. The most notable debuted in 2015, when Tudor released the first Pelagos to feature the brand’s in-house, COSC chronometer certified movement.
The Pelagos is a newer addition to the Tudor family of watches. Its name, Pelagos, comes from the Greek word for sea. The model was first released in 2012 as part of a completely revamped line-up of the brand’s dive watches. In contrast to their other dive watch offerings, Tudor created the Pelagos as the ultimate modern dive watch, both in its functionality and design.
The Pelagos is water resistant up to 500 meters, capable of going deeper than any of Tudor’s other dive watches. It features a lightweight yet durable brushed titanium case and bracelet, a first for Tudor and its parent brand, Rolex. The case measures at a hefty 42mm, making it ultra-modern, and is highlighted by a ceramic bezel.
The Pelagos is also equipped with a helium release valve (HEV), ETA 2824 caliber movement, and a 70-hour power reserve. The dial features at date window at the three-o’clock position and square hour markers. Finally, although the Pelagos is distinctly modern, it does give a nod to vintage Tudor models with the brand’s iconic snowflake hands, finished with a luminous touch for optimal visibility, and pointed crown guards.
The Pelagos comes with three strap selections, including two different rubber options: one for everyday wear and one extended length to wear on the outside of a dive suit. The third is a matte finished bracelet, furnished with an innovative “floating” clasp that allows the bracelet to adjust based on the wearer’s motions. This attribute was designed specifically with divers in mind, whose wrists expand and contract based on the water pressure.
Since the original Pelagos debuted, Tudor has released several new variations of the model. In 2015, they unveiled the first Pelagos to feature an in-house, COSC chronometer certified movement, the MT5621. A year later in 2016, Tudor launched the Pelagos LHD, a left-handed version of the model. Interestingly, the LHD is a numbered edition, a first for the Tudor brand.
The Pelagos is a modern departure from some of Tudor’s more traditional models. With it being a relatively new addition to the Tudor family, it will be interesting to see how the Pelagos evolves in the years to come.
