Patek Philippe's signature collection is the Calatrava family of watches, which was launched in 1932. The models in this series are considered to be the flagship of the Patek Philippe brand. The German-rooted Bauhaus art movement, which originated in the early 1900's inspired the design for the collection. The term 'Bauhaus' means 'school of building.' The architecture and engineering of the Calatrava timepieces reflects this philosophy. The result is an avant-garde collection that showcases lustrous lines and understated sophistication. Through the Calatrava models, Patek Philippe seeks to transcend modern trends while advancing the design to continually recapture the hearts of new generations. Some models in the Calatrava series feature a date function, such as the Calatrava 5127. However, other styles are 'time-only' watches, such as the Calatrava 5196. A majority of the timepieces in this collection have manual or automatic movements, but there are some that have quartz movements. Two of the most notable styles in the collection are the original Calatrava 3919 and its reinvented counterpart, the Calatrava 5119. The latter is a larger version of the former. Another prominent set of timepieces in the line are the Calatrava 96 and the modernized version the Calatrava 5196, which is also larger than the original model. Both of these updates and enlargements to older styles reflect the growing demand for larger watches.
