In 1917, Louis Cartier released a new watch inspired by the Renault Army Tanks of World War I. The Tank features proportions and strong straight lines that bring to mind the look and feel of these machines. The straps are well integrated with the timepiece and the metal bracelets on the models that include them resemble the distinctive caterpillar tracks of army tanks. The hands of the Tank are typically blue steel and sword-shaped, a distinctive feature of Cartier watches.
More than thirty varieties of this collection have been produced in the past 90+ years of the Cartier Tank watch history. These include the Tank Solo, Tank Americaine, Tank Louis Cartier, and one of most popular - the Tank Francaise - first featured in 1996. The Cartier Tank Francaise history began in an effort to offer an updated version of the Cartier Tank. After 16 years, Cartier introduced their most recent version of the Tank in June of 2012, the Tank Anglaise, featuring their in-house movement.
Cartier Tank history is full of famous wearers, both male and female. The elegant and classic design of this watch, along with it's accurate timekeeping, helps to further the reputation and the history of the Cartier Tank watch.
