Switzerland’s watch industry isn’t concentrated in a single city but rather spread across a landscape that has shaped the craft for centuries. On the country’s western edge in Geneva, maisons have long been associated with high horology and remain eligible for the Poinçon de Genève, a certification established in 1886 for watches that meet specific criteria within the Canton of Geneva. Head north into the Vallée de Joux, tucked deep in the Jura Mountains, and the terrain turns rural and isolated—a region historically known for developing highly complicated mechanical watches.

Biel/Bienne sits at the foot of the Jura Mountains and is one of Switzerland’s officially bilingual cities, where both German and French are used in government and daily life. It has long served as an industrial center, home to large-scale manufacturers and movement specialists. Nearby La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, both UNESCO-listed for their watchmaking town planning, reflect a different model: purpose-built cities designed around production.

Geography matters here. Mountain winters once pushed agricultural communities indoors, where watchmaking became seasonal work and eventually a national industry. Today, that legacy shows up in the range: small independent ateliers, vertically integrated manufactures, high-complication specialists, and high-volume producers.

Switzerland has about 9.1 million residents—roughly the population of New York City. From that compact country comes an industry that sets the benchmark for luxury watches worldwide. Above is a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, overview of the regions and makers that define Swiss watchmaking, offered as a guide for orientation and further exploration.
