The Yacht-Master line is one of the newer additions to the Rolex brand. As the name indicates, the Yacht-Master family is a collection of yacht watches, also known as yacht timers or regatta timers. These types of watches are specially designed for skippers to measure and anticipate the crucial interval leading up to the start of a regatta.
The original Yacht-Master debuted in 1992, but the reimagined version of the classic model was released nearly two decades later in 2010: the Yacht-Master II. The Yacht-Master II was introduced in two variations, the Ref. 11668 and Ref. 116689, in yellow gold and white gold respectively. Just a year later, Rolex issued another variation, the Ref. 11668, in stainless steel and rose gold. In 2013, the brand released an all-stainless steel model, the Ref. 116680. The first few models feature the Rolex 4160 in-house movement, but with the introduction of the 2013 model, the brand debuted an updated movement designed specifically for the Yacht-Master II: the 4161.
In addition to the all-new automatic movements, the key design difference between the original Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II is the size. Each of the Yacht-Master II models are equipped with a massive, oversized 44mm case featuring a 90-degree rotating ceramic bezel.
The Yacht-Master II also features some notable functional details. It’s furnished with that essential regatta timer function, but what sets it apart is the first-ever programmable countdown with a mechanical memory. The countdown function is illustrated in a horseshoe shape on the interior of the dial at the twelve-o’clock position. The display showcases a ten-minute timer with a red chronograph seconds hand and a flyback function. With the simple push of a button, the regatta timer can sync with a reference clock to the nearest minute.
While the Yacht-Master II is equipped with advanced technology for sailors, it has also become a favorite for everyday wear among Rolex enthusiasts. Its sporty design and particularly hefty size give this watch a modern and stylish appeal over some of its other yacht watch counterparts. In addition, it’s available in so many different style options that there’s a version to appeal to anyone’s unique taste.
