First debuting in 2013, the Rolex 116710 is instantly recognizable for its two-tone bezel. Like the other models in the collection, this uniquely designed feature has given the watch an affectionate nickname: the Batman. However, the Rolex 116710 is not just notable for its all-new blue and black design. It also marks the first two-tone iteration to feature Rolex’s innovative Cerachrom bezel. The Rolex 116710 has built a reputation on its unique two-tone bezel. Like each model in the collection, this colorway has garnered a unique nickname. It began with the Pepsi due to the distinct resemblance to the soda brand’s famous red and blue logo. Since then, there have been other soda-inspired monikers as well as superheroes and other characters. One of the latest debuted in 2013. The Rolex 116710 features a two-tone black and blue design dubbed the Batman or sometimes Bruiser, Phantom, or Dark Knight.
The Rolex 116710 is the second generation of the GMT Master, called the GMT Master II, which first launched in 1983 with Rolex officially retiring the original in 1999. The two variations may look similar at first glance. However, the second generation brought about a number of significant updates. Later on, one of these came in the form of the iconic bezel. In 2005, Rolex introduced their own version of ceramic called Cerachrom. The only problem was that the new material didn’t allow for the beloved two-tone design that had become a signature of the collection. For nearly a decade, the new Cerachrom variation of the model was only available in all black. That was until 2013 with the debut of the Rolex 116710.
To create the long awaited two-tone iteration, Rolex developed a patented method. The bezel starts out entirely blue. Later, they add the black element by masking half of the bezel and exposing the other half to a chemical process. This means that the blue and black portions of the Rolex 116710 are not two individual pieces connected together. Instead, they employ a mono-block construction. In addition, this innovative bezel showcases some other special detailing. They finish the engraved numerals with a thin layer of platinum and the bezel is diamond-polished.
The totally new and completely innovative bezel design isn’t the only thing that makes the Rolex 116710 special. In 2014, Rolex discontinued the production of the stainless steel version of the original Pepsi. Instead, they manufactured the model exclusively in 18-karat white gold. So for years, the Rolex 116710 was the only stainless steel model in the collection with a two-tone bezel. In addition, this variation introduces some other modern updates. These include thicker hands and larger scale lume plots as well as a Triplock winding crown as opposed to the Twinlock. The Rolex 116710 also showcases updates to the bracelet with polished center links instead of brushed. Furthermore, the Oyster bracelet comes equipped with the latest Oysterlock folding clasp and Easylink system, which allows for adjustments without the use of tools.
In 2019, Rolex updated the “Batman” with the new Rolex 126710. There are two main differences between the two iterations of the iconic colorway. First, the Rolex 126710 comes equipped with a new Caliber 3285 movement, which uses the brand’s Chronoenergy escapement. In addition, it now comes on a Jubilee bracelet as opposed to the Oyster. Still, the Rolex 116710 continues to be a favorite among collectors as well as athletes and entertainers, like Roger Federer, John Mayer, and Steve Carell.
