OMEGA introduced the Seamaster Planet Ocean as a variation on the classic Seamaster in 2005. Like the original Seamaster, the Planet Ocean is a remarkably robust dive watch. What sets the Planet Ocean apart from other variations of the Seamaster is the helium escape valve (HEV). This key function makes this model ideal for divers looking to explore great depths for long periods of time. Buying an OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean watch is an excellent choice for both amateur and professional divers or everyday wear. Although the Seamaster Planet Ocean is a newer addition to the OMEGA brand, it represents their continued commitment to oceanic exploration. The first Seamaster Planet Ocean debuted in 2005 with the 600M model. Like the other watches in the Seamaster family, the Planet Ocean 600M is a robust diving watch. It’s perfect for both professional and recreational scuba divers alike. However, you don’t have to be a diver to appreciate this model. It’s also a great sports watch for everyday wear.
The original Planet Ocean 600M is equipped with many standard features of the OMEGA brand. It’s available in three different sizes: 39.5mm, 43.5mm, and 45.5mm. It also comes in a wide array of materials, including stainless steel, gold, and titanium. In addition, it’s offered with a number of strap options, including rubber, water resistant leather, or a metal bracelet. All of the Seamaster Planet Ocean models feature a unidirectional bezel, which helps divers track their immersion times. In early variations of the model, the bezels were exclusively ceramic. Today however, OMEGA makes some of the bezels with a cutting-edge combination of ceramic and rubber. Here, on the first fifteen-minutes displayed in colorful rubber. Both the bezel and dial also feature Super-LumiNova accents for optimal visibility in low light.
What distinguishes the Planet Ocean models from the rest of the Seamaster line is the helium escape valve (HEV). This key feature makes the Planet Ocean models optimal for divers looking to reach great depths for prolonged periods. When divers go on these types of expeditions, they have to descend in a diving bell. The diving bell is highly concentrated with helium and hydrogen to counteract the extreme conditions present in great depths. Because helium atoms are very small, they can easily slip inside a watch case. As the diving bell ascends to the surface and depressurizes, so does the diver’s watch. This is when the helium atoms inside the watch case in tandem with the changes in pressure could cause the crystal to pop off the case and damage the watch. However, with a HEV, the wearer can safely expel the helium from the watch during decompression.
In addition to its wide array of features for divers, the Seamaster Planet Ocean is also the official watch of James Bond. Just a year after its debut, the Bond franchise introduced a new 007 and with him a new watch: the Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial. Since then, actor Daniel Craig has sported one of the Planet Ocean models in almost every subsequent Bond film. That was until the latest installment of the franchise. In Spectre, he upgraded to a specially designed model: the OMEGA Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition.
Over the years, OMEGA has continued to build upon the Planet Ocean collection by releasing new variations. One of the most recent came in 2019. That year, they debuted the Seamaster Planet Ocean Tokyo Limited edition. The brand did so in honor of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for which they’re the official sponsor and timekeeper. The model features a sleek and sporty all-white design with red accents as a nod to the Japanese flag. The red accents appear on the sweeping seconds hand as well as the number twenty on the bezel, highlighting the year of the games. 2019 also marked the year the Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional became the deepest diving watch ever. The model set a new world record with adventurer Victor Vescovo, who took his submersible nearly 11,000 meters under the sea into the Mariana Trench with the watch attached to the outside of the vessel.
