The defining characteristic of the Aqua Terra collection is the unique “teak concept” dial that features a vertical line pattern inspired by the wooden decks on luxury yachts. About OMEGA Aqua Terra Watches
Since the introduction of the original OMEGA Seamaster in 1948, sport watches continue to grow in popularity. In order to compete with other highly coveted sport watches like the Rolex Submariner, OMEGA has consistently focused their attention on developing their Seamaster line. These efforts resulted in the introduction of subcategories within the Seamaster family. First, they introduced the more casual Seamaster Professional series in the late 1950s. More recently, they launched the dressier Seamaster Aqua Terra series in 2003.
The Aqua Terra is a newer addition to the OMEGA family of watches. Yet, the collection actually draws inspiration from earlier Seamaster models. When OMEGA first created the Seamaster, it incorporated elements from other dive watches like the brand’s first water resistant timepiece, the Marine. However, the brand wanted the watch to be versatile and appeal to those looking for a dress watch for everyday wear. The Aqua Terra’s elegant style evokes a similar aesthetic to dress watches. One of the model’s key features is the “teak concept” design on the dial. This vertical line pattern is a nod to the wooden decks on luxury yachts and other expensive boats. Other distinguishing characteristics of the Aqua Terra line include the arrow-tipped minute hand and the tapered hour markers.
Like many of the watches in the OMEGA family, the Aqua Terra timepieces are available in a variety of sizes and materials. There’s also an array of different complications offered in the Aqua Terra line, including annual calendar, date, GMT, and more. In addition, the Aqua Terra models are available in both automatic mechanical movements and quartz calibers. The newer variations in the Aqua Terra collection are equipped with the OMEGA Master Chronometer automatic movement. This mechanical movement is particularly remarkable because it’s passed rigorous tests set by the Swiss Federal Institute for Metrology (METAS).
There are a number of notable variations within the Aqua Terra line. In 2015, OMEGA released the Limited Edition Aqua Terra James Bond in conjunction with the 007 film Spectre. In this model, they replaced the distinctive “teak concept” on the dial with the Bond family coat of arms.
Just a year later in 2016, OMEGA debuted three unique editions of the Aqua Terra. First, they introduced the Seamaster Aqua Terra GoodPlanet. This model spurred from OMEGA’s partnership with the GoodPlanet Foundation, a charity that works to raise awareness about environmental issues. Then, they released the Seamaster Aqua Terra > 15,000 Gauss. This is the world’s first mechanical watch resistant to 15,000 gauss, the unit that measures magnetic density. Lastly, they launched the Limited Edition Ryder Cup Aqua Terra in celebration of one of professional golf’s most famous events. Similar to the James Bond model, the Ryder Cup variation replaces the “teak concept” with a dial modeled after the texture of a golf ball.
In 2017, OMEGA continued to build upon the Aqua Terra line with the debut of a Master Chronometer variation. A year later, they created another Ryder Cup edition of the model. The commemorative model received some noticeable updates from the previous Ryder Cup iteration. It features yellow gold accents on the dial, strap, and caseback as well as the classic teak concept on the dial. As the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games, OMEGA also designed the Seamaster Aqua Terra PyeongChang 2018 Limited Edition for the winter games in South Korea.
More recently in 2019, the brand unveiled an all-new take on the model with the Aqua Terra Ultra Light. OMEGA collaboratively designed the variation with their ambassador and pro golfer Rory McIlroy. The model’s case, caseback, and crown are each comprised of a special alloy called Gamma Titanium. This marks the first time the brand has used such material. In addition, the model comes equipped with a titanium movement, the Caliber 8928. As the name suggests, all of these features contribute to its lightweight and ergonomic nature, weighing just 55 grams.
The Seamaster is arguably one of the most timeless and successful lines in the OMEGA family of watches. Being part of that collection, the Aqua Terra is a dive watch with both personality and precision.
