The Aquatimer was IWC’s first venture into the world of dive watches. The original model was relatively simple and straightforward. However, over the years, IWC has become more inventive with the Aquatimer. The brand employs the use of innovative materials, like titanium and an experimental non-magnetic material designed specifically for mine clearance divers. When the Aquatimer celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, IWC debuted a special edition model featuring a new case material called Ceratanium.
In the 1960's scuba diving began to grow in popularity, which prompted the release of IWC's first Aquatimer model in 1967. The original Aquatimer was outfitted with an internal rotating bezel that displayed dive time and resisted pressure up to 200 meters. Then, in 1982, the first diver's watch made of titanium was introduced with an external rotating bezel and an impressive pressure-resistance up to 2000 meters. These timepieces set the foundation for the newest generation of Aquatimers, launched in 2009. Still upholding the reliability, precision, and refinement of the earliest models, this generation includes a number of technical improvements. One of the most noteworthy modifications has been the continually perfected external rotating bezel with inset sapphire glass. The latest Aquatimers are also treated with a thick coating of Super-LumiNova, which allows the dive time to be read in conditions with poor visibility and lighting. In 2009 the first diver's watch made of a precious metal was also introduced, the Aquatimer Chronograph. The Aquatimer Deep Two is another remarkable model featuring an accurate mechanical depth gauge that specifies the dive depth in real time as well as the maximum depth reached up to 50 meters. The Aquatimer Chronograph Galapagos Islands special edition timepiece pays tribute to IWC's commitment to sustainability. The company donates a substantial sum to the Charles Darwin Foundation, which works to preserve the magnificent Galapagos ecosystem.
