When Carlo Crocco first began conceptualizing the Hublot brand in the 1970’s, he had a clear and distinct vision—from the iconic porthole-shaped case for which the brand is named to the inventive rubber strap that has become a hallmark of the brand. In 2004, Jean-Claude Biver joined the brand with a mission to take it to the next level by returning to the 1970’s roots on which Hublot was founded. A year later, the Big Bang was born, and a whole new world opened up for Hublot.
The Big Bang is the modern embodiment of those characteristics that first defined Hublot—the porthole-shaped case and the rubber strap—but reimagined in a bold yet comforting way. The Big Bang was a breath of fresh air for the brand while still being recognizably Hublot.
After the debut of the Big Bang, Hublot was thrust to the forefront of the industry. The watch received the coveted award for Best Design at the famous Grand Prix d’Horologerie de Genève. Biver knew Hublot needed to ride the momentum and elevate the brand even further, so he expanded the Big Bang collection by offering new materials and complications.
As the Big Bang collection flourished, Hublot continued to push the limits of the “art of fusion” concept, which is simply the combination of unlikely materials. By abandoning the classic watch materials, like gold, platinum, and stainless steel, Hublot opened up new possibilities for the Big Bang, like exciting color combinations from “Black Lemon” to “Tutti Frutti.”
In 2015, Hublot celebrated the ten year anniversary of the Big Bang with the addition of three new models: the Unico Full Magic Gold, the Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve Indicator Full Magic Gold, and the Unico 10 Years Haute Joaillerie. The Unico Full Magic Gold features the in-house Unico movement and the brand’s unique scratch resistant 18-karat gold. The Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve Indicator Full Magic Gold is the first tourbillon in the new generation Big Bang line. And the Unico 10 Years Haute Joaillerie collection includes ten distinct watches in four different versions—black, white, blue, and ruby—each priced at $1 million and feature 653 precious stones in the corresponding colors, totaling to over 40-carats per watch.
Now, for over ten years, the Big Bang has been a revolution in watchmaking. In the years to come one thing is certain: the Big Bang will continue to evolve in a way no watch has before.
