Rolex Day-Date

Day-Date History & Interesting Facts

The RolexDay-Date was released in 1955 and had many features that were considered ahead of its time, including an automatic movement plus day and date discs. Because of these unique features, the Rolex Day-Date son became the flagship model for Rolex. The Rolex Day-Date is often considered to be a favorite of many past presidents, including Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Johnson, and is often called the Rolex President.

About a year after the first Day-Date (model 6511) premiered, a new model (6611) replaced it. The two models looked very similar in appearance, but the difference lied on the inside of the watches. The 6611 contained a new caliber 1055 movement with a free sprung Micro-Stella balance. The Rolex company guaranteed that the watch would remain within 3 seconds per day and marked the dial with the words, “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” Rolex has released many updates throughout the years, the most current one being the 3155.

The Day-Date is offered in yellow gold, pink gold, and platinum. All early models of the Day-Date are water resistant up to 50 meters and new models can withstand 100 meters.

Take a look at some of the great Rolex Presidents below, and you’ll understand why this watch continues to be so highly valued by Rolex enthusiasts and watch lovers alike.
