The days are getting longer, there’s a hint of warmth in the air… Spring is just around the corner! While ladies are hanging up their coats, boxing up their boots, and pulling out their pastels, men have a different signifier of Spring: Spring sports! Golf season is upon us, and those followers of the sport are already counting down to one of golf’s biggest days, the 77th Annual Masters Tournament. In just T-minus 15 days, golf’s most faithful followers will flock to Augusta, Georgia for the weeklong competition between the sport’s finest players.
Among those gearing up for the event is Tiger Woods, who will be playing his 19th consecutive Masters tournament, but will Tiger’s head be in the game? Recently Woods’ love life has been a buzzing topic in the press, yet again. On Monday, March 18, 2013, both Tiger Woods and his new love interest, Lindsey Vonn, officially announced their relationship on their Facebook pages. While Tiger has rebounded from his 2009 scandal, it’s no surprise the media has taken interest in his newly declared relationship, particularly with the impending Masters tournament. Will the Olympic and World Cup downhill ski champion be in attendance? Could this be sports’ next power couple?
In addition to their mutual love for each other and athleticism, this hot new couple shares another interest as well: Rolex watches. Following the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vonn was named the 42nd most marketable athlete, and one of her many endorsement deals includes Rolex watches. In 2011, Tiger Woods signed his first endorsement deal since the 2009 scandal with Rolex watches. Interestingly, this is not his first connection to the brand. Woods had an endorsement deal with Tudor watches, a member of the Rolex family, when he first entered the pros, prior to his deal with TAG Heuer. His partnership with Rolex reflects the brand’s passion and long-standing commitment to the sport of golf. In the past, Rolex has had relationships with esteemed golfers such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. In addition to Tiger Woods, other Rolex endorsers include fellow golfers Phil Mickelson, Luke Donald, Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, and Lorena Ochoa.
So, as you tune into the Masters beginning April 8, keep your eye out for what Tiger and his new lady are sporting on their wrists. Typically, Tiger does not wear a watch during play, but he always has his Rolex of choice in tow for interviews and press conferences between rounds. Sources have spotted Woods in a Skydweller, Daydate, and Deepsea, to name a few, while Vonn is frequently spotted wearing a Datejust.
